There’s also a degree of strategy with some extra loot mechanics thrown in.

With these stacking on top of the usual hack n’ slash mayhem and the signature Musou attacks, plus a rage meter, Orochi 4 gives you heaps upon heaps of options when it comes to slicing and dicing tens of thousands of hapless goons. There’s magic that corrals dozens of dudes into a levitating Katamari ball, giant swirling laser tornados that yeet bad guys to the shadow realm, and joint attacks that are basically magical nukes. You can wrack up combos in the thousands in ten to twenty seconds with just a few button presses – and that’s just with the basic attacks. During the most hectic moments, one swing of your weapon can easily hit dozens of foes at once. Orochi 4 is probably the most densely populated entry in this series. Every time a new console is revealed, a certain kind of gamer asks themselves, “Huh, wonder how many dudes they can put on the screen in the next Dynasty Warriors?” Now that we’re nearing the end of the console generation, the answer to that question is, “a whole effing lot.” The Warriors franchise is, in a way, a benchmark for each console generation. It’s a silly bit of fluff that exists to bring all of these different characters together, and really, that’s all it needs to be. The pretense of bringing together all these characters, which include Ninja Gaiden’s Ryu and Bladestorm's Joan of Arc in the Ultimate release, is pretty goofy – but that’s fine. There are even Fire Emblem adjacent support conversations between each of the 191 (!) playable characters. It’s a bunch of goofy fan service, and if you’re in the market for that, it’s pretty solid. There are some stylish cutscenes and fun bits of dialogue, but they’re mostly there to show off characters chatting with each other who ordinarily wouldn’t. Orochi 4’s story isn’t necessarily the selling point of this thing. Lu Bu also becomes a demon king, because yeah, that tracks. There’s magical jewelry, Norse gods, and every possible Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, and Warriors: Legends of Troy character you can think of. There’s very little in the way of exposition up front, with the basic pretense of the game being that Zeus is bringing a bunch of different time periods together for… reasons.

Check out some of its gameplay footage through here.Orochi 4 wastes no time in getting to the absolute bonkers craziness that comes with mashing together the different strains of Warriors. Warriors Orochi 4 launches in Japan later this month for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, while it’s also slated for a Western release on October 16. Interestingly enough, Furusawa-san emphasized that there won’t be any visual enhancements or features in the game that will be exclusive to the Xbox One X, in spite of the extra juice its hardware offers, simply because of the fact that this is a game launching on several systems- which includes the significantly less powerful Nintendo Switch, by the way. It should also be noted that it’s not clear whether this will be native 4K.

We recently conducted an interview with developers Omega Force, and Furusawa Masaki, who’s serving as producer on the upcoming hack-n-slash title, told us that both on the Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro, the game would hit 4K resolutions, and run at 60 frames per second, though he did mention that the frame-rate would be “variable”. Warriors Orochi 4, the next instalment in Koei-Tecmo’s crossover franchise that spawns from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, is not far away from its Western launch, and as is the case with most, if not all, major releases these days, it’ll be sporting some pretty neat visual enhancements on the Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro.
